The winter 2025 School of Dentistry Anthology, or SoDA, features a diverse collection of research from dental students, residents and faculty members. The issue showcases:
- Critically Appraised Topics, or caseCATs, from a clinical scientific inquiry course
- Thesis abstracts from recent orthodontic resident graduates
- Periodontology and endodontology residents’ research abstracts
- Pediatric manuscript from a second-year dental student and faculty member
First-year dental students take a clinical scientific inquiry course in the fall that helps them understand the background, principles and value of evidence-based dentistry. The process teaches students to search, critically review and apply scientific literature to answer clinical questions. Ultimately, the method helps dental professionals make evidence-based decisions in practice for patient care. Students produce a Critically Appraised Topic, or caseCAT, a concise summary of the best available evidence related to a specific clinical question. Seven caseCATs are highlighted in this edition.
Also in this issue are thesis abstracts from four orthodontic residents from the class of 2024, research abstracts from periodontology residents who graduated in 2024 and current endodontology residents and a paper on the management of non-vital primary teeth in pediatric patients from a second-year dental student and a faculty member.
Sharing scholarly work
The online academic publication allows for the OHSU School of Dentistry to share its scholarly work.
The publication is peer reviewed, fully citable and searchable through the OHSU Library Digital Collections.
The purposes are to:
- Encourage scientific and clinical collaboration and discovery.
- Give students, post-doctoral scholars, residents and junior faculty a way to communicate their discoveries on a platform with a short publication cycle and no fees.
- Introduce students and new investigators to the publication process, including writing, peer review and editing.
- Showcase the school’s expertise in original research, case studies, critically reviewed topics, reviews or commentary.
- Promote the school’s visibility and reputation in the research and dental communities by demonstrating its expertise and advances in oral health.
