Oregon Health News Hospital Report
Edited by Rhonda Morin
The downturn in the United States economy has had an effect on hospitals’ bottom lines. Drops in investment income and variable rate bonds have made some hospitals in the state a bit squeamish; while others are confident they have the cash reserves to ride out the storm—as long as it doesn’t last too long. Yet many are not overly concerned since they continue to see patient volumes grow.
The increased demand of charity care, as more people head to emergency rooms in a bad economy to get their medical needs met regardless of their ability to pay the bill, is where some hospitals—especially urban—are feeling the pinch.
